HUNAR started in a rented shed behind the Panki power station with one arc welding set and eleven students. The supervisors from the estates nearby kept telling us the same thing: the certificates were fine, the hands were not. So we flipped it — seventy percent of every course is time on the machine, and the theory follows the work instead of leading it.
Today the campus runs eight trades across two shifts, and our instructors are not lecturers. Every one of them worked the trade for at least eight years before they ever stood in front of a batch.
Attendance is measured in machine hours, not lecture hours. Your logbook is signed station by station.

Panki campus runs from 7 in the morning to 8 at night. This is what the floors look like on a normal Wednesday.
Four of our eight trades now run women-majority batches, and it is not only beautician and tailoring. Kanpur's solar installers and mobile repair counters are hiring women faster than we can train them, because customers ask for them by name.
What we changed to make it work: a separate girls' hostel wing with its own gate, a women-only morning shift in the welding and fitting bays, transport tie-ups to Govind Nagar and Kidwai Nagar, and a female warden on campus until the last evening batch clears.

My son failed twelfth twice and I had given up. Six months of the electrician course and he is now on the maintenance shift at a Panki unit, coming home tired and proud. I sent his younger brother the next year.
I was stitching at home for eight years and earning nothing worth counting. The tailoring course taught me pattern cutting and how to quote job-work. Four machines now, and two women working with me.
We hire four to six welders from HUNAR every year. The difference is the arc hours — their boys can strike a clean bead on day one, so we are not paying them to practise on our material.
Evening batch saved me. I was doing a shop job from ten to five, then coming here till eight. In three months I had the mobile repair certificate and now I run my own counter in the same market.
I was the only girl in the solar batch on day one. By week three there were nine of us. The instructor never once treated the ladder as a men's thing, and that is the whole reason I stayed.
